BMW Garmisch: Behind-the-Scenes Details

2024/11/01

Experience the allure of classic design reimagined with the revival of the BMW Garmisch at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Originally designed in 1970 by the legendary Marcello Gandini, the BMW Garmisch showcased an avant-garde fusion of Italian style and Bavarian precision engineering. Although the original Garmisch was lost to history shortly after its Geneva Motor Show debut, BMW’s 2019 recreation honors Gandini’s vision down to the smallest detail, bringing this iconic concept car back to life.

At its core, the BMW Garmisch’s design highlights Gandini's distinctive style, blending sharp angles, an angular kidney grille, and unique louvered rear windows. Gandini, who designed the Lamborghini Miura and Alfa Romeo Carabo, created the Garmisch to push BMW’s design boundaries in an era that valued futuristic aesthetics. This one-of-a-kind concept was meant to spark the imagination of both car enthusiasts and industry insiders, and its unexpected disappearance only heightened its legendary status.

In 2019, BMW decided to recreate this concept under the guidance of Adrian van Hooydonk, enlisting Gandini himself for detailed insights. The build involved a delicate mix of vintage and modern techniques, from sourcing Fiat X1/9 door handles and Fiat 130 Coupe headlights on eBay to custom fabricating the period-correct Cromodora wheels. Even the Autovox radio, purchased from an Italian restorer, crackles just like the original, lending authenticity to the recreation. This dedication to detail ensures the new Garmisch faithfully embodies its original, with every element painstakingly brought to life.

In this video, we explore the history of the BMW Garmisch Concept.
