DS AUTOMOBILES has revealed its new DS 4 as well as high-riding crossover version called the DS 4 Cross.

The previous DS 4 hatchback struggled to compete with the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes A Class but the new model is noticeably more upmarket in design.

In DS 4 Cross guise, the silhouette of the vehicle shifts more towards that of a traditional SUV, and optional extras include Advanced Traction Control for improved control on tricky surfaces.

A new Performance Line variant has the same driving characteristics as the standard DS 4 hatchback but comes with black trim and exclusive interior.

The underpinnings of the car are based on those used in other cars made by DS Automobiles’ parent company, PSA — now part of the newly-formed Stellantis group — including the DS 7 Crossback, Citroën C5 Aircross, Peugeot 3008 and new DS 9 executive saloon. However, 70% of its parts are new or exclusive to the DS 4.

The all-new DS 4 is based on the also new EMP2 platform, featuring a striking exterior design with pretty nice proportions inspired by the company’s Aero Sport Lounge concept.

The DS 4 features the company’s new DS Matrix LED Vision headlights, which are said to combine matrix and directional lighting, complemented by two S-shaped rows of LEDs on each side acting as daytime running lights. The doors come with flush-fitting handles while the rear is highlighted by the longer and lower roofline and the muscular rear fenders.

The French premium brand of the newly launched Stellantis decided to offer the new DS 4 with a range of tech features usually found on more expensive models. These include things like the Active Scan suspension, which uses a camera to read the road ahead and adjust the suspension accordingly, a large head-up display that appears four meters ahead of the windscreen thanks to its trick technology, and a Level 2 driving assistance system.

The interior of the 2020 DS 4 looks special and different, as expected from a new DS model. There’s a new infotainment system that operates through a 10-inch touchscreen display with a new interface and the ability to be controlled by both voice and gestures. The central air vents are “invisible”, as they are nicely integrated with the climate controls, while the window switches are mounted inside the door trim for an uncluttered appearance.

Customers will get to choose between Nappa leather, and Alcantara upholsteries for the high-density foam seats, as well as brown ash wood trim, forged carbon, exposed stitching, and the list goes on. If you ever wanted to see how it feels to sit inside an expensive purse, the new DS 4 looks like a good place to do it.

here are three versions: the standard DS4, DS4 Cross and the top of the range DS4 Performance Line.

Powering the DS4 is a range of powertrains promising a top speed of up to around 140mph with 0 to 62mph acceleration in 8.5 seconds.

These include PureTech petrol engines in 1.2-litre 130hp and 1.6-litre 180hp and 225hp; a diesel BlueHDi 1.5-litre 130hp engine; and a frugal but powerful plug-in hybrid petrol electric set up producing 225hp.

The battery-powered plug-in hybrid set-up comprises a turbocharged 180PS 4 cylinder petrol engine linked to 110hp electric motor with a range of more than 30 miles

All are linked to 8-speed automatic gearboxes.
