2025 Mercedes-AMG GLE-Class
Price: $90.350–$133.300
Overview
What's better than a luxurious Mercedes midsize SUV? One with AMG-fettled powertrain and chassis. The automaker's celebrated tuning arm offers such a vehicle, both based on the GLE-class: The GLE53 has a 429-hp turbocharged inline-six, and the GLE63 S turns things up with a 603-hp twin-turbo V-8; the former hits 60 in 4.4 seconds, the latter in 3.4. Both have a fancy suspension system that reduces body roll using power from the 48-volt mild-hybrid system. And lest you think these road rockets are all play and no work, know that they can pull an impressive 7700 pounds—quickly. Buyers looking to add some style to their speed can opt for the slinky coupe-like body style in either model, and standard luxury features include heated and ventilated front seats, a Nappa leather sports steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof. Competitors abound, from the Audi SQ7 and SQ8 to the BMW X5 M and X6 M to various Porsche Cayenne models. There must be something in the water over in Germany.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Both AMG GLEs feature a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, as well as a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. In the GLE53, a 48-volt electric supercharger combines with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine to produce 429 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. The GLE63 S's twin-turbo V-8 makes a stout 603 horses. The AMG GLEs also feature a trick suspension consisting of an air-bag system coupled with active anti-roll bars that's said to provide corner-carving capabilities without sacrificing ride quality. The GLE53 coupe we drove felt smooth even on uneven roads. Switching its drive mode to Sport or Sport Plus stiffened up the suspension enough to help keep the heavy family hauler stable when the pavement coiled.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Inside, two giant digital displays dominate the dashboard of every GLE-class. The interior environs are sportier than in the standard Benz models, though, as the AMG versions come with sport seats with red contrasting stitching, a sport steering wheel, red seatbelts, and aluminum accents. The cabin is spacious too, even in the back seat. A third row of seats is optional with the SUV's squareback body style. The GLE53 offers the same cargo space as the GLE450, which means it has space for a whopping 11 carry-on suitcases behind the second row of seats and, with the rear seats stowed, room for up to 26 cases. However, the GLE53 coupe's sloping roofline results in a loss of 5 cubic feet of cargo space, and the area held two fewer suitcases with all seats in place and five fewer with the rear row stowed.
