BMW McLaren F1 GTR

2024/08/30

Among automotive legends, few cast as long a shadow as the McLaren F1. Only a torturously small number were made for the road—each one the ultimate expression of a road car—and they’re rarely seen, let alone sold. Powered by a phenomenal BMW V12 engine, paired with a crisp manual transmission, and built with extensive carbon fiber and aluminum, the McLaren F1 GTR remains strikingly advanced even 30 years later. But racing wasn’t part of the original plan. From the start, designer Gordon Murray set out to create the best road car possible, with no intention of hitting the track. It wasn’t until Le Mans winner John Nielsen convinced Murray and McLaren to modify a spare F1 chassis for racing that the F1's motorsport journey began.

Upon its debut, the McLaren F1 earned the title of the world’s fastest car, reaching a top speed of 240 miles per hour on Volkswagen's 5-mile test track.

In this video, Tom Plucinsky, Head of BMW USA Classic, tells the story of the McLaren F1 GTR.
