Mitsubishi was an early mover in petrol-electric hybrid passenger cars, with the full-size Outlander PHEV arriving a decade ago. Since then the technology has been refined and trickled down to the compact Eclipse Cross.

Offered in three grades, the Eclipse Cross Plug-in Hybrid EV Exceed sits at the top of the tree, combining a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with twin electric motors, for optimal efficiency and all-wheel drive capability.

Predominantly pitched at young urban families, Helen Frost drove it in the city before taking the car out of its comfort zone on a road trip from Sydney, more than 750 kilometres north to Byron Bay, looking for charging options and assessing fuel efficiency all the way.
