Mazda has premium ambitions. No, seriously. While already considered semi-premium, the Japanese brand is looking to level up with the release of the 2023 Mazda CX-60.

The CX-60, of course, is a new mid-size SUV, one that has the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5 and company in the firing line. Yep, Mazda's attempting to do a Lexus and Genesis, albeit without creating a dedicated brand for its parent's upmarket ambitions.

This means the CX-60 is not your usual Mazda. For example, it sits on a new rear-wheel-drive platform, which is the exact opposite of what its slightly smaller CX-5 sibling offers.

The CX-60 also has a variety of new powertrain options, including petrol and diesel six-cylinder engines, and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that combines a petrol four-cylinder unit with an electric motor.

But in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Stephen Corby heads to Mazda's native Japan to see if the diesel CX-60 can justify its existence. After all, oil-burners are on the nose for passenger-car buyers.
