BMW Uncovered: The Alpina Roadster V8 & Z4 M Coupé — Where Classic Met Future

2026/05/02

The 2003 BMW Alpina Roadster V8 and the BMW Z4 M Coupe E86 are two sides of the same coin—and opposite sides of automotive history.

The Alpina Roadster V8 is a one-off in BMW lineage. Built on cutting-edge chassis engineering hidden beneath a classic exterior, this is number 500 of just 555 ever made. It's an automatic transmission version of the manual-only Z8, perfect for romantic summer afternoon drives along twisty roads, and its design led to the creation of the pivotal GINA concept car.

Following GINA was the Z4 M Coupe. Unique surfacing. Innovative undulation. A busy design that could go wrong but didn't—perfectly balanced as a single, cohesive vision inspired by GINA’s fabric skin. The Z4 was a glimpse into the future built exclusively in South Carolina, making it an essential vehicle in the history of BMW North America.

Join Tom Plucinsky and Steve Saxty as they explain how these cars represent the same era while focusing on different directions of BMW lineage.

BMW Uncovered goes beyond the spec sheet for an inside look at the classic BMW models that shaped driving as we know it. With BMW veteran and product authority Tom Plucinsky alongside automotive designer and BMW historian Steve Saxty, each episode blends firsthand experience with deep design and heritage knowledge.
