Audi RS5 | The 2.3 tonne drift monster (but we try it on the road too) | Autocar

This is the new Audi RS5. Audi has done some weird things with its names recently but it’s effectively the new RS4.

And it’s Audi Sport’s first plug-in hybrid RS car.

That means it gets a 2.9-litre V6 engine, AND an electric motor for a 630bhp total, AND four-wheel drive, AND a 22kWh battery AND a 50 mile electric range.

All of those ANDs means that it weighs more than 2.3 tonnes. Yikes. And yet the technical boss (he’s sometimes in the passenger seat in this vid) tells us that he wants the car to oversteer.

So it has a very trick motor on the rear differential, to divert power left and right and send the new RS5 very sideways.
