2025 Mercedes-AMG GLS-Class
Price: $150.650
Overview
Mercedes does not make a slow GLS-class SUV. Instead, buyers get to choose just how quick they want theirs to be. The GLS450 reaches 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, and the GLS580 whittles that down to just 4.7 seconds, but that only scratches the surface. The mad scientists at Mercedes-AMG created the GLS63, which leapfrogs ahead of the Benz-branded models thanks to a 603-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 engine that allows a sports-car-rivaling 3.6-second run to 60. Aside from its prodigious power and sporty styling, the AMG GLS is much like its less-quick siblings, its size and mass limiting behind-the-wheel excitement to straight-line speed alone. Still, it's a very comfortable place for the whole family, with a tech-forward modern design and supple leather covering most surfaces. Then again, for $150,000, it should be. If you'd rather go full-fat fancy with a little less speed, the Maybach GLS600 focuses on pure poshness.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Under the hood of the GLS63 is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine that makes a whopping 603 horsepower and is outfitted with a 48-volt hybrid system. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a nine-speed automatic transmission and air suspension. While we were impressed with the GLS's acceleration, we can't say the same for its driving dynamics. The ride is firm, especially on the optional 23-inch wheels, but that firmness doesn't translate to a feeling of unflappable precision when cornering, though it does offer plenty of grip to have some fun with on a twisty road.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
A third row of seats—with room for six or seven passengers in total—sets the GLS63 apart from two-row SUV powerhouses such as the BMW X5 M and the Audi RS Q8. Like those competitors, the GLS63 is gorgeously appointed inside. Soft leather covers nearly every square inch of the cabin, and those areas that aren't leather-wrapped are treated to genuine wood trim and tastefully applied metal trim; buttons and knobs are rendered in a rich-looking metallic finish. Front-seat occupants can enjoy a massage while blasting down the interstate, and passenger space is generous in the second row, which is heated and can also be equipped with power sunshades. The third row of seats is tight for adults but perfectly suitable for children. Cargo space is the same as with the standard GLS-class, which in our testing fit four carry-on suitcases behind its third row and 30 in total behind the front seats.
