EV vs V12: 'SuperJag' takes on the XJ!

2026/03/31

How do you capture - and reproduce - the essence of a classic car? That was JLR's intention back in 2021, when it set out to make a template for what might be the boldest Jaguar ever made: its new electric GT.

Rather than benchmarking competitors, it drove a number of classic Jaguars from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust collection, and sought to establish a recipe that it could follow for the new car.

E-Types, XK140s and XJ-S were all involved; but the most influential classic Jaguar in the process was the 1975 XJ-C V12 coupe.

Five years later, with the new electric Jaguar nearing completion and due for market launch in 2027, Jaguar invited Autocar to its Gaydon proving ground to go through the same process; to rediscover the 'Spirit of Jaguar' that it had sought to define, and then reanimate in the new car.

Join Road Test Editor Matt Saunders as he drives both the new car, and its 1970s inspiration; and finds the common ground they share, with explanation from Jaguar 'JEA' Platform Chief Engineer Jon Darlington.
