2025 Chevrolet Suburban
Price: $65.095–$87.795

Overview

Chevrolet's size-XXL Suburban SUV has been hauling people and cargo all over America since 1935. Aside from its grown-up station wagon proportions and truck-based chassis, the tech-laden and luxed-up 2025 edition has little in common with the crude Carryall models that originated the nameplate. Today's Suburban has room for up to nine in its three rows of seats, an infotainment system with an internet connection, a robust maximum towing capacity, a refined on-road demeanor, and an abundance of luxury features. While it shares its platform with the shorter Tahoe SUV, the Suburban's longer wheelbase creates more space for people and cargo inside. Two different gasoline-fired V-8 engines are offered, as is a diesel inline-six, all mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Suburban's heritage may stretch the longest, but other large SUVs such as the Ford Expedition Max and the Jeep Wagoneer L offer serious competition. Those other big lugs aren't quite as graceful as the Suburban over the road, but both can tow heavier trailers. As one of our favorites in its segment, the Chevrolet Suburban has earned a spot on our Editors' Choice list for 2025.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8 is the default engine but for more grunt, a 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 is optional. A 305-hp diesel 3.0-liter inline-six is also available and is both torquey and fuel efficient. All three engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The Suburban also can be fitted with adaptive dampers and an adjustable air suspension. The latter allows the big SUV's ride height to be both automatically and manually lowered or raised. This enables improved passenger accessibility, aerodynamics, and ground clearance. The rugged-looking Z71 off-road trim has 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, plus underbody skid plates and a two-speed transfer case that provides traditional four-wheel drive. In our initial test drive of the 2025 Suburban, we found it offers better driving dynamics than you'd expect given its size and enjoyed the smooth diesel engine in particular.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As one of the largest SUVs, the Suburban offers a cavernous interior with plenty of room for both people and cargo. Three rows of seats can fit up to eight riders in most models (versions with the optional front bench seat can hold nine passengers, while models with the optional second-row captain's chairs can fit seven). There's enough legroom for just about anyone to find a comfortable position even in the rearmost row, especially since the second-row seats can slide fore and aft to adjust the passenger space. Behind the third row is a large cargo area that will easily swallow a family's road trip accouterment. The load floor is flat and low, making loading and unloading easier than in rivals with their higher floors. Entry-level models are predictably plainer than those at the more expensive end of the range, but Chevy still equips them with useful and convenient features such as automatic climate control, several power outlets, easy-to-fold second- and third-row seats, and more. The High Country model is the most luxurious; it includes posh wood trim and perforated leather upholstery and is offered with unique interior color schemes.
